Alternatives for a better quality of life SAN ANTONIO POPULAR LIBRARY located in Pirané, Formosa (Argentina) Our activity began in 1983; the idea came up, of bringing the neighbors together in a meeting of wills so that a good number of our neighbors and interested others could improve their own living conditions. Our Local Community comprised of people over 14 years old who for different reasons do not have a minimum education illiterate; semiliterate or who have abandoned their studies) to this we must add that their family life is surrounded by poverty and indigence (2002 Census 42% indigence and 27% poverty); women and young people are particularly the most harmed. Project Description
.
Beginning in 1985 we began literacy courses and terminal education programs for adults through an agreement with the regional Ministry of Education; as well as courses on Garden and plant nurseries; on dressmaking and fashion design and hairdressing; and on top functioning operation the Popular Library, with scholastic support on the three levels of education.
In 1998 due to legal and tax related requirements we incorporated ourselves as a nonprofit Organization (until then we worked informally). From our beginnings our objective is the search for valid productive alternatives that will allow members of the Urban and rural community to improve the quality of life of the family group without affecting their idiosyncrasy and to produce at least enough for household consumption and to commercialize the excess. - Short courses in wool weaving crafts are offered, cotton demonstrative small farm producing interested/the beneficiaries produce different varieties of cotton, of crafts specially nontraditional type, together with the improvement of the existing ones in the zone. Year after year the number of interested/beneficiaries increases, which makes it necessary for us to expand and improve.
Expansion and improvement of the existing operation at all levels, due to the increasing demand of alternative activities renders necessary the upgrading of what we offer for the well-being of the families. With a specific reinforcement, it is possible to grow significantly and to be able to obtain our objectives in just a short while. Let it be noted that the WHOLE governmental system, as much national as provincial, is geared towards giving aid to ventures and projects of great dimensions; leaving aside the very small producers, thus causing the rural exodus. With the establishment of training courses and demonstrations of different productive alternatives, the rural denizen can see that it is possible to reorganize his activity without great modifications, producing at least the necessary for his household consumption and to commercialize the excess or exchange it with other producers. In addition he is offered the possibility of sorting out and of packaging the excess product such as corn, beans, honey, candies, etc which assures its commercialization at no additional cost. With a minimum of articulation different alternatives take place, whether vegetable, animal or artisan, which render it imminently necessary to expand and to improve the productive systems.
